Simulations of petawatt laser wakefield acceleration with the APOLLON laser at CILEX

An example of a project spun-off from two bi-lateral STSMs, to establish collaboration between Laboratoire Le-Prince Ringuet (École Polytechnique) and the Niels Bohr Institute (University of Copenhagen). 

Plasma density in the wake (left) of a petawatt femtosecond laser pulse (right). An Ion ‘bubble’, almost completely devoid of electrons (central dark region), is pulling electrons (bright spot) along (rightwards) at the speed of the laser pulse — the speed of light.
